When I was pregnant with my first two (born just eleven months apart, so I was pregnant for 2 decades, I mean years!), I quickly realised that my jeans and office dresses weren’t going to cut it. I tried the old “rubber band around the button” trick, but by the second trimester, I knew I had to give in and buy proper maternity clothes. By the time my last two babies came along, I had found the stores and brands that actually make you feel good in your own skin. If you’re anything like me, you want to look presentable without spending a fortune on clothes you’ll only wear for a few months. The good news is that South Africa has some fantastic options—from budget-friendly basics to boutique pieces that feel a little more special.
Let’s start with the everyday staples. Hannah Grace Maternity is one of my favourites because it’s local, affordable, and their pieces are designed to last beyond pregnancy into breastfeeding. Their wrap dresses and cotton gowns are lifesavers in those last weeks when comfort trumps everything. Another budget-friendly go-to is Cherry Melon. You’ll find them online and at retailers like Pick n Pay Clothing, and their basics are comfy, easy to style, and reasonably priced.
If you’re heading to the mall, H&M South Africa has a maternity line that’s both stylish and affordable. Their maternity jeans with elastic waistbands carried me through two pregnancies. Cotton On Body also stocks maternity-friendly leggings and sleepwear that double as postpartum favourites. And of course, Woolworths has timeless basics, especially in neutral tones that fit right into a capsule wardrobe.
When you want something more boutique, Momsy is worth browsing. Their maternity dresses are feminine and modern, perfect if you have a baby shower or maternity shoot on the horizon. Tummies Maternity Wear is another South African brand offering stylish workwear, dresses, and feeding-friendly tops. For moms who want to keep things chic, Poetry often carries bump-friendly dresses in flowy cuts that transition beautifully into postpartum.
For those leaning into comfort but still wanting quality, Faithful to Nature stocks eco-friendly maternity essentials, including natural fabrics and supportive undergarments. And if you’re on Takealot late at night (because what pregnant mom isn’t?), you’ll find good deals on brands like PregO and Carriwell.
The key to building a maternity wardrobe is to focus on pieces that mix and match easily. A few stretchy dresses, leggings, and tops can take you from work to weekend. Add one or two special pieces for moments when you want to feel a little more put together, like your maternity shoot or baby shower.
And here’s a tip I wish I’d learned sooner: don’t wait until you’re desperate. Start adding a few items in your second trimester so you’re not stuck buying in a rush when nothing fits. It makes the whole experience feel calmer.
Many of my maternity clients in Pretoria, Johannesburg, and Centurion ask for wardrobe guidance before their shoot, and I always remind them that simple, neutral pieces photograph beautifully. You don’t need glitter or sequins. A soft cotton dress in white, beige, or blush will look timeless and feel like you. That’s why I keep my client wardrobe stocked with easy, flattering options – you just show up and we make sure you feel comfortable and beautiful without any fuss.
Whether you’re on a tight budget or want to spoil yourself with a boutique piece, South African stores have you covered. Choose items that make you feel good, keep it simple, and remember this is just a season. What matters most isn’t the clothes, but how you feel while wearing them
