Maternity photoshoot mistakes you don’t want to make

March 26, 2025 by Jackie

Pregnancy is beautiful—but maternity shoots can go wrong if you don’t plan ahead!

Avoid these common mistakes to get maternity photos you’ll love forever.

  1. Booking Too Late (Or Too Early!)

The best time for maternity photos is between 28 and 34 weeks—before you feel too uncomfortable but with a beautifully round belly. If you wait too long, you might feel tired and swollen. If you book too early, you might not have the bump you were hoping for.

  1. Choosing the Wrong Outfit

Many moms stress over what to wear. You don’t have to! I provide simple, flattering wardrobe options that photograph beautifully.

  1. Worrying About Posing (I’ll Guide You!)

You don’t need to know how to pose—I take care of that! I’ll guide you into flattering, natural positions that highlight your pregnancy glow.

  1. Not Including Your Partner or Kids

Should your partner or older children be in the photos? Absolutely! Including them creates more meaningful images. We’ll capture moments of connection, love, and excitement as you prepare to welcome your baby.

  1. Not Booking a Photographer Who Understands Moms

A stress-free session is everything. At adore’ photography, I keep it simple, fun, and natural—so you can enjoy the moment without worrying about the details.

Newborn photography trends for 2025: What’s in and what’s out

March 19, 2025 by Jackie

If you’re expecting a baby in 2025 and planning a newborn photo session, you might be wondering what’s trending in newborn photography. While timeless, natural images will always be a favorite, certain styles, props, and approaches are evolving. Here’s what’s making waves in 2025 (and what’s fading away).

1. Less Posing, More Personality

Out: Overly posed, sculpted newborn setups In: Natural, relaxed baby-led posing

Gone are the days of stiff, highly stylized newborn poses where babies are placed in intricate positions. In 2025, the focus is on natural movements—stretching, yawning, snuggling with parents. Photographers are embracing a “baby-led” approach, letting little ones settle into positions that feel natural to them, creating images that feel authentic and emotive.

2. The Rise of the “At-Home” Aesthetic

Out: Elaborate studio setups with heavy props In: Lifestyle sessions in the client’s home

More parents are opting for in-home newborn photography rather than traditional studio sessions. The appeal? Real-life moments captured in the comfort of your own space. Expect more cozy nursery shots, soft morning light streaming through windows, and interactions between parents, siblings, and pets that tell the story of those early newborn days.

3. Neutral and Earthy Tones Dominate

Out: Bright, heavily saturated colors In: Soft neutrals and warm earth tones

Muted, natural colors are taking center stage in newborn photography. Think warm beiges, soft browns, gentle creams, and dusty pastels. These tones create a timeless, soothing aesthetic that keeps the focus on the baby rather than flashy backdrops or props.

4. Documentary-Style Storytelling

Out: Perfectly staged images with forced smiles In: Candid, raw moments

Parents are leaning towards documentary-style photography that captures real emotions and interactions. Instead of looking at the camera, families are encouraged to simply be in the moment—cuddling, feeding, or even experiencing those tiny baby cries. These images aren’t just about how a newborn looks; they tell a deeper, more meaningful story.

5. Simpler, Softer Wrapping Techniques

Out: Tight, intricate wrapping styles In: Loose, flowing wraps

The trend of tightly swaddled babies in complex wraps is giving way to softer, more organic wrapping styles. Light muslin wraps, airy textures, and a more effortless feel are in. The goal is to keep things looking natural and unforced while still providing the cozy, wrapped-up look that parents love.

6. Including More Family Moments

Out: Baby-only portraits In: Parent and sibling interaction

Instead of focusing solely on the newborn, 2025’s trend is all about incorporating the whole family. Parents holding their baby, siblings gently touching tiny fingers—these moments add depth to the images and create a story beyond just a solo portrait of the newborn.

7. Digital & AI-Enhanced Minimalism

Out: Heavily edited, over-processed images In: Light, natural editing with subtle AI enhancements

While AI tools are evolving, they’re being used in newborn photography in a way that enhances rather than dominates. Subtle skin retouching, gentle light enhancements, and background refinements keep images looking clean and polished while maintaining their natural essence.

8. Monthly Milestone Series

Out: One-time newborn shoots In: Ongoing baby photography journeys

More parents are opting for long-term milestone photography, capturing their baby’s growth month by month. Instead of a single newborn session, photographers are offering packages that include follow-ups at 3, 6, and 12 months, ensuring families have a full visual story of their baby’s first year.

Final Thoughts

The biggest shift in newborn photography for 2025? Less perfection, more connection. The trends lean toward raw, real, and meaningful moments that tell a family’s unique story. Whether you’re planning your own newborn session or simply love swooning over baby photos, these trends ensure that the focus stays where it should—on the beautiful, fleeting moments of new life.

Maternity photography trends for 2025: What’s in, what’s sooooo 2020

January 20, 2025 by Jackie

Pregnancy is a wild ride—one minute you’re crying over a baby onesie, the next you’re googling “how much longer can ribs expand before they break?” But one thing that never changes? The desire to capture this incredible time in a way that feels authentic, beautiful, and effortless.

Maternity photography in 2025 is all about natural moments, simplicity, and personal expression. If you’re expecting this year and thinking about booking a maternity shoot, here’s what’s trending (and what we’re saying goodbye to).

1. Minimalist, Timeless Aesthetic (Goodbye, Over-the-Top Setups)

Gone are the days of elaborate floral arches, giant fabric wings, and excessive props. The trend for 2025 maternity photography leans toward clean, minimalist setups that highlight you—not the background. Soft fabrics, neutral tones, and natural lighting are all you need for a classic, elegant maternity session that won’t feel dated in five years.

Think: Simple white backdrops, soft textures, and a focus on genuine expressions.

2. Candid & Lifestyle Maternity Sessions (Less Posing, More Feeling)

Perfectly posed hands-on-belly shots will always have their place, but candid maternity photography is taking over. Think: laughing with your partner, playing with your toddler, cozying up at home—images that feel like a true reflection of this stage in your life.

Trending: In-home maternity sessions for a cozy, intimate feel.

3. Outdoor Mother-Nature Vibes (But Make It Effortless)

Studio maternity sessions are still popular, but outdoor locations are having a moment—especially spots that feel organic and natural. Instead of complicated destination shoots, more moms-to-be are choosing local hidden gems like grassy fields, greenhouses, or simple nature-inspired settings that keep the focus on them.

Trending: Locations that feel like an extension of real life—soft fields, quiet gardens, and open spaces with natural light.

4. Classy Black & White Portraits (Timeless & Emotional)

If you’re looking for a style that never goes out of fashion, black-and-white maternity photography is it. The lack of color puts all the focus on emotion, shape, and connection, making the images feel raw and powerful.

Trending: Simple, moody black-and-white portraits that highlight the curves and beauty of pregnancy.

5. Soft, Flowy Dresses (Goodbye, Stiff Gowns & Corsets)

The trend is shifting away from structured, stiff maternity gowns and more towards flowy, relaxed fabrics that move with you. Lightweight materials, soft draping, and neutral tones let your bump shine without looking overly styled.

Trending: Soft, boho-inspired fabrics that feel as good as they look.

6. Including Siblings & Pets (Because It’s a Family Thing!)

A maternity session isn’t just about the bump—it’s about the people (and furry friends) who are part of this journey. In 2025, more parents-to-be are including siblings, partners, and even their pets for a session that feels full of love, fun, and connection.

Trending: Candid sibling moments, partner interactions, and including pets in a natural, effortless way.

Final Thoughts: Your Maternity Photos, Your Way

At the end of the day, maternity photography should feel like you. Whether that means a cozy in-home session, a simple studio shoot, or a relaxed outdoor vibe, the goal is to capture this chapter in a way that feels natural and timeless.

If you’re expecting in 2025 and looking for a stress-free, beautifully simple maternity session, I’d love to help! Let’s make it easy, relaxed, and all about you.

Book your maternity session today! (Before baby arrives and you forget what a full night’s sleep felt like 😉)

Can I still exercise during pregnancy?

January 10, 2025 by Jackie

Safe Workouts for Each Trimester

When I was pregnant with my first two (born just eleven months apart), exercise was the last thing on my mind. I was too busy running to the bathroom, craving salty chips, and trying to squeeze in naps between work and baby prep. By the time my younger two came along, I had learned something important: exercise during pregnancy isn’t about pushing yourself harder, it’s about keeping your body moving in ways that support you and your baby.

If you’re wondering whether you can still exercise during pregnancy, the short answer is yes. Most South African doctors and midwives recommend it, as long as you listen to your body and avoid anything high-risk. Exercise helps with circulation, reduces back pain, improves sleep, and even makes recovery a little easier. But the kind of workout you choose depends on which trimester you’re in.

In the first trimester, many moms feel exhausted and nauseous, so gentle movement is enough. Walking, light stretching, or prenatal yoga are perfect. If you’re in Pretoria or Johannesburg, studios like Yogazone and The Yoga Republic offer prenatal classes tailored for pregnancy. Even a ten-minute stroll around your neighbourhood or at the mall counts, especially if you’re keeping your energy up with small, steady meals.

By the second trimester, your energy often returns and you may feel more like yourself again. This is a great time to try low-impact cardio such as swimming, stationary cycling, or longer walks. Virgin Active and Planet Fitness clubs across Gauteng welcome pregnant members and many trainers are qualified to suggest modifications. Swimming is especially good if you’re battling with swollen ankles—it takes the weight off and feels amazing.

The third trimester is all about keeping mobile without straining your body. Prenatal Pilates, gentle yoga, or even body-weight exercises like squats and wall push-ups can help prepare you for birth. Many moms in Centurion swear by Preggi Bellies, a South African-based exercise program designed specifically for pregnant women. Their classes focus on strength, stability, and breathing, which is exactly what you need heading into labour.

There are a few activities to avoid. Anything high impact, like running or heavy lifting, can put strain on your joints and ligaments. Contact sports, horse riding, or cycling outdoors also carry higher risks of falling. The golden rule is simple: if it feels uncomfortable, stop. If you’re ever unsure, speak to your gynae or midwife before starting something new.

What I love about exercise during pregnancy is that it’s not about chasing a fitness goal. It’s about supporting your body in one of the most demanding seasons of your life. With four kids, I know how quickly pregnancy shifts into the blur of newborn days, toddler chaos, and eventually teenagers taller than you. Staying active – even gently – makes those transitions feel easier and gives you more energy to enjoy the little things.

If you’re based in Pretoria, Johannesburg, or Centurion, you’ll find plenty of antenatal classes, yoga studios, and gyms offering modified programs. Websites like BabyYumYum and Parent24 often list updated resources for moms looking to stay active safely. And if getting out isn’t possible, YouTube has excellent prenatal workout channels where you can follow along from home with nothing more than a mat.

Remember, exercise during pregnancy is less about how you look and more about how you feel. Your body is already doing the hardest work of all – growing a human. So be gentle, stay consistent, and choose movement that makes you feel good.

And while you’re looking after your body, don’t forget to also hold onto the memory of this season. Many of my maternity clients tell me their sessions felt like a celebration of how strong and beautiful they were in pregnancy, even when they didn’t feel it themselves. That’s why my approach is calm, natural, and effortless, so you can see yourself exactly as your family sees you.

So yes, you can exercise during pregnancy. Just keep it safe, keep it simple, and remember that slowing down and showing up for yourself is more than enough.

Toddlers, tantrums, and tiny moments: Why toddler photography is worth the chaos

May 21, 2024 by Jackie

Toddlers, Tantrums, and Tiny Moments: Why Toddler Photography is Worth the Chaos

Let’s be honest—life with a toddler feels like living with a tiny tornado. One minute they’re quietly stacking blocks; the next, they’re throwing their third tantrum before breakfast because you peeled their banana wrong. If this sounds painfully familiar, congratulations—you’ve reached peak toddlerhood. But amid the chaos, noise, and sticky fingerprints everywhere, there’s something genuinely magical happening: your toddler’s personality is taking shape.

And guess what? As exhausting as it might feel right now, this messy, funny, totally unpredictable stage deserves its own special photoshoot. Here’s why you shouldn’t overlook toddler photography in Gauteng—and why you’ll thank yourself later for capturing these wild, wonderful days.

1. Chaos is Actually Beautiful (Hear Me Out)

You probably spend half your day cleaning up after your toddler. I get it—mess isn’t exactly cute when it’s splattered across your wall or ground into your couch. But when you step back, there’s a beautiful honesty in all that toddler chaos. It’s real, it’s raw, and yes, it’s even a little poetic. Someday, when your house is eerily tidy again, you’ll miss this vibrant, chaotic stage. Photos remind you just how beautifully messy life used to be.

2. The Big Personality in a Tiny Person

Toddlers are the absolute definition of “big personalities in tiny bodies.” They’re funny, stubborn, curious, affectionate, and fiercely independent (usually all within five minutes). Professional toddler photos capture the heart of this unique stage, giving you visual proof of their budding personality. Trust me—one day you’ll cherish evidence of that adorable stubborn streak, even if it drives you crazy right now.

3. Because It’s Easy to Miss While You’re Living It

When you’re deep in the trenches of toddler parenting, it’s tough to appreciate how fleeting this stage really is. You’re just surviving day to day, coffee cup in hand, hoping they’ll nap longer than 20 minutes. But soon, your toddler will be a preschooler, then suddenly off to school—and you’ll wonder how you missed it.

Professional photos slow things down, making sure you clearly see—and remember—these whirlwind days.

4. Genuine Moments Over Perfect Portraits

Toddler sessions aren’t about forcing your child to sit still (because, honestly, that’s not happening). They’re about capturing genuine moments: the belly laughs, cheeky smiles, stubborn frowns, or even the mid-tantrum face that makes your kid completely, hilariously themselves. Forget Pinterest-perfect poses; the real magic is in the authentic, unplanned moments.

5. Memories Fade—Photographs Don’t

Your tired parent-brain is already struggling to remember yesterday, never mind every adorable toddler detail from this entire year. Photos, on the other hand, never fade. They preserve exactly how your toddler scrunched their nose when they laughed or how fiercely they hugged their teddy bear. Without these images, your memories of toddlerhood become blurry over time. Photos are your best chance at keeping those moments sharp.

6. Boosting Your Child’s Confidence (Proven by Experts)

Did you know that children who regularly see photos of themselves displayed in the home tend to have higher self-esteem? Dr. David Krauss, a licensed psychologist, emphasizes how these images reinforce belonging and confidence. Having tangible proof of how loved, adored, and valued they are—even in their messiest moments—helps your child feel secure and confident from the very start.

So yeah, booking that toddler shoot is practically a public service.

7. Toddlers Keep You Young (Even if They Make You Feel Old)

Raising a toddler is exhausting—no argument there. But there’s also something rejuvenating about experiencing the world through their wide-eyed wonder. Professional toddler photos don’t just document your child; they capture you at your most playful, spontaneous, and present. Because yes, chasing after a toddler keeps you young—even if it ages you at double speed simultaneously.

8. These Photos Will Be Your Comic Relief Later

Right now, toddler tantrums might feel overwhelming. But years from now, these same moments will become your family’s comic relief. Imagine your teenager’s reaction when you pull out photos from the day they dramatically threw themselves on the floor over mismatched socks. Capturing this funny, frustrating stage becomes one of your family’s best inside jokes later on.

9. Money Comes and Goes—Toddlerhood Doesn’t Wait

Sure, budgets are tight, and toddlerhood isn’t exactly known for being inexpensive (hello, diapers and snacks!). But unlike the new couch or the latest gadget, photographs hold emotional value that actually grows over time. Ten years from now, you won’t care what those pictures cost—you’ll just feel relief that you invested in something genuinely priceless.

10. Because They’re Only Little for a Moment (No, Really)

Here’s a gentle but sobering reminder: your toddler won’t stay little forever. They’re changing every day, right before your eyes. Every tantrum, sticky hug, funny mispronunciation, and spontaneous “I love you” will vanish into memories sooner than you realize. Toddler photoshoots are your chance to hold onto all those tiny moments before they’re gone forever.

Don’t Miss Your Chance

Here’s the truth: as messy, loud, and exhausting as life with a toddler can be, it’s also bursting with a sweetness you’ll desperately miss one day. Toddlerhood is a wild, fleeting ride—and photos are your best bet for preserving these fleeting moments before they’re replaced by school days and soccer practice.

Professional toddler photos aren’t about perfection or calm—they’re about authenticity and joy. They’re your way of saying, “Yes, this stage is messy, exhausting, and a little crazy, but it’s ours—and it’s beautiful.”

If you’re ready to embrace the chaos and capture this wild, wonderful stage, Adore Photography is here to help you freeze those tiny moments forever.

So yes, book that photoshoot. Your future self (and your future teenager) will thank you.

Why baby milestone photos are a gift to your future self (seriously, you’ll thank me later)

May 20, 2024 by Jackie

Why baby milestone photos are a gift to your future self (seriously, you’ll thank me later)

Okay, let’s be real: parenting a baby often feels like living in a time warp. You blink, and suddenly your tiny newborn is sitting up, crawling, or even making that adorable “mama” sound you’ve been patiently waiting for. Every morning feels like meeting a slightly different version of your baby—it’s exciting and amazing, but let’s be honest, it’s also kind of heartbreaking how quickly each phase slips away.

That’s exactly why milestone photos aren’t just another cute trend—they’re actually the best gift you can give your future self. And yes, I promise future-you is already nodding in agreement.

Here’s why baby milestone photography is worth prioritizing, even if life feels chaotic (and your budget feels tight):

Because babies change overnight (literally)

I don’t know who coined the phrase “the days are long, but the years are short,” but clearly, they had babies. In the first year alone, your baby transforms from a sleepy bundle into a crawling, babbling, giggling personality. One day they’re lying there looking adorable; the next, they’re trying to pull themselves up on the coffee table.

Professional milestone photos slow down that relentless march of change, giving you clear, vivid markers of every adorable phase your memory might soon blur.

Your memory isn’t as reliable as you think (sorry)

Sleep deprivation, mom-brain, whatever you want to call it—your memory probably isn’t going to win any awards during your baby’s first year. Those midnight cuddles, toothless grins, and chubby thighs? You think you’ll remember clearly, but trust me: details fade quicker than you’d imagine.

Milestone sessions anchor those memories in photographs, creating solid proof of the days your brain is honestly too tired to hold onto.

Milestones capture the little things you didn’t know you’d miss

You might think milestone sessions are about capturing big firsts like sitting or standing, but they’re actually about the little things you didn’t realize you’d soon miss—the way your baby’s toes curled, their gummy smiles, or the funny way they scrunched their nose while tasting avocado for the first time.

You don’t realize how much you’ll treasure these tiny details until they’ve quietly disappeared.

You’re documenting personality, not just growth

Your baby’s personality emerges rapidly throughout that first year. By documenting milestones regularly, you’re building a tangible record of who your child was, even at just a few months old. Was your baby chill and relaxed? Feisty and opinionated? Your photos hold those answers, and you’ll love looking back years later, nodding and saying, “Yep, you were totally yourself from day one.”

Your child will cherish these later (really)

Milestone photos aren’t just for you. Imagine your child as a teenager or adult, discovering these images that lovingly documented their journey. You’re gifting your kid their own story—a priceless record of their earliest self. And who doesn’t want to see proof that their parents adored every drooling smile and wobbly first step?

The investment will feel tiny later

I get it—life is expensive, and adding one more thing to the budget feels daunting. But milestone sessions are less about spending money and more about investing in something invaluable: your memories. Trust me, when you look at these images five or ten years from now, the cost won’t even register. You’ll only feel grateful that you prioritized preserving these fleeting stages.

Creating traditions (and future nostalgia)

Regular milestone photos become a tradition, something your family looks forward to. Every few months, you pause and intentionally document growth, change, and family dynamics. This repeated ritual creates a beautiful, nostalgic rhythm to your family’s life, giving your kids something special to look back on (and gently tease you about, probably).

Because you’ll never regret having too many photos

Seriously, no one has ever complained about having too many adorable photos of their baby. But plenty of parents express regret for skipping milestone sessions because “life was too busy” or “we planned to, but never got around to it.” Don’t be that parent. Your future self already loves you for booking the shoot.

Your family’s history, documented

In ten years, twenty, or even fifty, these milestone photos will form a visual history of your family. You’ll sit around the table reminiscing, flipping through albums, laughing about the funny expressions and awkward haircuts. It’s about creating a legacy that transcends time and generations.

Your baby is only this little today (sobering, I know)

This version of your baby – this squishy-cheeked, gummy-smiled, impossibly cute little person – will literally never exist again. Tomorrow, they’ll be slightly different, a little older, and a little closer to growing up. Milestone photos don’t just document growth; they remind you to savor today exactly as it is.

Here’s the honest truth: Your baby won’t remember whether their clothes were expensive, or whether their nursery looked Instagram-perfect. But they’ll deeply value seeing proof of how loved they were from day one, how closely you watched every little step they took, and how much joy they brought into your world.

And as for you? These photos become treasures you didn’t realize you’d desperately want until the moment had passed. They become something you hold tight, memories you revisit over and over, with tears, laughter, and gratitude.

So yes, future-you is counting on current-you to book the milestone session. You’ll never, ever regret it.

The Value of newborn photos : Moments money just can’t replace

May 10, 2024 by Jackie

The Value of Newborn Photos in Gauteng: Moments Money Just Can’t Replace

The early days with a newborn—it’s a total blur, isn’t it? Between round-the-clock feeding, constant laundry, sleep deprivation, and Googling things at 3 AM like, “is it normal if my baby makes a sound like a dolphin,” those first few weeks often pass in a haze. Ask any mom, and she’ll tell you: when you’re deep in the newborn trenches, it’s easy to forget exactly how tiny your baby was, or what day of the week it is, for that matter.

That’s precisely why newborn photos aren’t just nice to have; they’re actually priceless. Here’s why capturing those early days with a professional newborn photographer in Gauteng is something you’ll genuinely never regret.

1. The Newborn Stage is Over in a Blink (No, Really)

You wait nine months to meet your little one, and suddenly, they’re already outgrowing those adorable newborn outfits within weeks. Did you know babies typically only look and behave like newborns for the first two to three weeks of life? Yep—it’s incredibly fleeting.

Photographing your baby professionally during this brief window is the closest thing you’ll get to slowing down time. And trust me, you’ll need that reminder later when your “baby” is a sassy toddler or an eye-rolling teenager.

2. Clear Memories from the Hazy Newborn Days

In those initial weeks, you’re not sleeping, showering regularly feels like an accomplishment, and dinner is often toast eaten over the sink. Amidst this chaos, your memories can become fuzzy at best.

Beautiful newborn images become vivid reminders of details you might otherwise forget—like how tiny their fingers were, the swirl of hair on their head, or how they fit perfectly against your chest. Your photos become your memories, holding onto moments your tired brain just can’t.

3. Preserving the Emotion, Not Just the Moment

Sure, you can snap some quick pics on your phone, but a professional newborn shoot captures something deeper—the emotions you felt in those early days. Professional photographers know exactly how to document connection: your exhausted but loving gaze, your partner’s quiet pride, your baby’s impossibly small yawn. These emotional snapshots will anchor you to feelings you might not clearly remember years later.

4. It’s About Connection, Not Perfection

Worried about not looking photo-ready just days after giving birth? Relax—you just had a baby; you’re practically superhuman. Professional newborn photography is never about perfection. It’s about capturing the real, raw, and powerful connection you share with this tiny new person. Your future self won’t care if your hair was messy; she’ll just be grateful for proof of how much love surrounded her baby from day one.

5. Photos Help Ground You Through Parenthood

Did you know studies indicate that looking at family photos can boost happiness and emotional well-being? Having professional images of those early newborn days displayed around your home serves as an emotional touchpoint. When parenting feels overwhelming (because it will), these photos remind you why you’re doing it all—because these small, exhausting moments add up to something pretty incredible.

6. They’re Irreplaceable Emotional Heirlooms

Newborn photos aren’t just keepsakes; they’re emotional heirlooms passed down through generations. Someday your child will look at these images, seeing exactly how cherished they were from their very first moments. It’s a gift to them, reinforcing their identity and sense of belonging, something no amount of money can replace.

7. Quality Matters (Especially for Once-in-a-Lifetime Moments)

We all take snapshots on our phones, but newborn photos are once-in-a-lifetime images deserving of more than a casual shot. A professional photographer provides expertise—knowing how to safely pose your newborn, understanding lighting, and most importantly, recognizing how to capture authentic moments. This is not the place to cut corners because you’ll never get a second chance at your baby’s first weeks.

8. Prioritizing Memories Over Budget Constraints

Yes, budgets are real, and yes, sometimes they’re tight. But consider this: in five or ten years, will you remember what you spent that money on instead of newborn photos? Probably not. But you absolutely will remember—and treasure—these photographs.

Viewing newborn photography as an emotional investment rather than a financial decision reframes its true value. Remember, these are memories that money genuinely can’t buy later.

9. Capturing Family Dynamics (As They Actually Were)

Professional newborn sessions often include parents, siblings, and even family pets, capturing real-life family dynamics exactly as they were during those first few weeks. The chaotic yet beautiful interactions, the older sibling cautiously holding their new baby brother or sister—these fleeting moments are incredibly precious and completely unique to this stage of life.

10. You’re Only This Young Once (Embrace It)

This isn’t just about your newborn; it’s about you as well. You might be exhausted now, but trust me, you’ll never be younger than you are in this moment. Capturing this stage is a gift you’ll thank yourself for later. Those photographs become proof that you survived—and thrived—in those challenging early days, a reminder of how far you’ve come as a parent and a person.

Don’t Miss Your Chance

Your newborn is changing literally every day, right before your tired eyes. These precious early weeks are the definition of fleeting. Newborn photography isn’t just something you’ll treasure—it’s genuinely irreplaceable. One day, you’ll look back at these photos with a lump in your throat, grateful beyond words that you prioritized capturing your family’s earliest moments.

So, book the shoot. Forget perfection, forget budget anxiety. Focus instead on the priceless value of holding onto moments that truly will never come again. Because when it comes down to it, the only newborn photos you’ll regret are the ones you didn’t take.

Searching for a newborn photographer in Gauteng who understands how to make sessions easy and stress-free? I’d love to help you document these irreplaceable first moments. Contact Adore Photography today.

Why annual family photos matter more than you think

February 21, 2024 by Jackie

Let’s be honest—life is busy. Between packed school schedules, after-school activities, and juggling about fifty different responsibilities as a parent, planning a family photo session every year might seem like another box you just don’t have the energy to tick. And I get it. It might even feel like a luxury you can’t afford, especially when money feels tighter than ever.

But let me gently (okay, maybe not that gently) remind you: these are exactly the times you’ll look back on and wish you’d prioritized capturing. Let me show you why scheduling those annual family sessions isn’t just something nice-to-have; it’s actually more important for your kids—and your family as a whole—than you might realize.

1. Kids Thrive on Connection (Yes, Really)

Documented research has shown kids who regularly see themselves in family photos feel more secure, confident, and connected. Dr. David Krauss, a psychologist, emphasizes how photographs reinforce family bonds and self-esteem. Seeing themselves surrounded by loved ones on the walls of your home consistently reminds kids: “I’m part of something important. I’m loved.”

You know what builds self-esteem more effectively than any praise-filled parenting book ever could? Being able to point at the wall and say, “See? You’re one of us, kid.”

2. Blink, and They’re Grown (Seriously)

We’ve all heard the clichés—”it goes by so fast!” But clichés exist for a reason. One day your kids are playing dinosaurs on the carpet, and the next they’re asking you about university applications. Time is sneaky that way.

Family sessions freeze little moments, giving you tangible proof of how fast they grow and change. Trust me: One day you’ll give anything to look at a photo and remember the exact size and shape of their tiny faces before they grew up and started borrowing your car keys.

3. Emotional Time Capsules

Photographs aren’t just about how your family looked. They’re emotional anchors to specific chapters of your life. Each annual family session creates an emotional time capsule—every silly expression, every affectionate hug, every stage that will never come again.

Think of annual sessions like bookmarks in the story of your family’s life, clearly marking each precious year before you flip too quickly to the next chapter.

4. Family Identity Matters

Psychologists agree that a sense of family identity helps kids feel anchored. Being regularly photographed as a family helps solidify a sense of belonging. It says, “Hey, we’re in this together.” When kids understand their roots clearly, they grow into adults with stronger emotional intelligence and a deeper sense of who they are.

So really, by booking annual photos, you’re basically investing in raising emotionally healthy humans—no pressure!

5. Priorities Over Budgets (Stick with Me)

Listen, nobody’s dismissing tight budgets. But here’s a gentle reality check: families prioritize what matters to them, budget or no budget. You probably wouldn’t think twice about spending on sports uniforms, birthday parties, or school outings. Family photos deserve a spot on that priority list, not as a luxury, but as an investment in your family’s emotional health and happiness.

Years down the line, you won’t remember the money—but you absolutely will treasure the photos.

6. Documenting the Little Details (Before You Forget)

Every year brings subtle changes that become big, meaningful milestones when you look back. The way your youngest wrinkled their nose when they laughed, or how your eldest was suddenly tall enough to wrap their arms around your shoulders. Photos ensure you won’t lose these tiny details that slip your mind all too easily.

Because, let’s face it, mom-brain is real, and it doesn’t exactly improve with age.

7. You’ll Never Be Younger Than Right Now (Sobering, Right?)

Here’s some tough love: every year that passes, you’re a year older. Yes, you. You’ll never be this young again, and neither will your kids. Annual sessions aren’t just about the kids growing—they’re also about capturing you in the thick of parenting, with all your warmth, laughter lines, and tired but totally worth-it smiles.

Trust me, one day you’ll look back and think, “Wow, we looked amazing—why did I think I wasn’t photo-ready?”

8. A Gift to Future Generations (Not Even Kidding)

Imagine your children, years down the line, showing their kids photos from their childhood, pointing out family traditions, funny hairstyles, and awkward growth spurts. You aren’t just investing in now—you’re giving your family a tangible legacy to pass down.

Even if right now you’re not feeling sentimental, one day you’ll see your grandchildren squealing at the sight of their mom or dad as a teenager. That alone is worth every cent.

9. Strengthening Family Bonds

Research also highlights how collaborative activities—like having photos done together—strengthen relationships. It’s a shared experience that reminds everyone, “Hey, we like each other. Mostly.”

Even if getting everyone dressed and out the door feels stressful, by the time you’re laughing in front of the camera, you’ll remember why you do this in the first place.

10. Preventing Regret (Because That’s the Worst)

I’ve never heard a parent say, “Wow, we have way too many photos of our family.” But I regularly hear regret over missed years—”I wish we’d done them when the kids were younger.”

Regret is a stubborn feeling that sits with you for years. A family photo session takes just an hour or two—but the results last forever.

Look, nobody’s saying family photos should bankrupt you. But maybe, just maybe, shift your thinking about them from “nice-to-have” to a genuine investment. Because truly, some things are worth prioritizing. The soccer fees, the birthday cakes—they all fade. But these emotional anchors of your family, growing together year by year? These are priceless.

Your kids won’t remember how clean the house was, what car you drove, or whether you bought them the fanciest toys. But they’ll remember how they felt—loved, included, and part of something lasting.

Book the shoot. You won’t regret it—I promise.
